Telework!VA is the one-stop resource for Virginia’s employers, employees, and managers looking to make teleworking a successful, productive part of how they work.

The Telework!VA program was launched by the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) to help reduce the number of vehicles on Virginia's roadways traveling to and from the office. More importantly, a flexible telework program helps companies attract and retain productive employees, reduce employee absenteeism, and lower operational and recruitment expenses. Regardless of the size of the company, Telework!VA can help make a company’s telework program more productive and beneficial for employers and employees.

What is Telework!VA?

Telework!VA (also called Telework Virginia) provides resources and free consulting services to businesses in Virginia, and their employees, to encourage and enhance successful teleworking throughout Virginia.

Is this a free service?

Yes! This program is operated by DRPT (link to DRPT website) and is free for Virginia’s businesses and their employees.

What’s the Catch?

There is no catch.  All of Telework!VA services are free!  As a state agency, DRPT can provide expert professional and technical assistance at no cost to any employer located in Virginia.

What services does Telework!VA provide?

The following services are provided to employers located in Virginia, at no cost:

  • Customized training for managers on successfully supervise teleworkers and measure performance
  • Customized training of employees on how to be a productive teleworker
  • Communication strategies for managers and teleworkers
  • Assessment of positions for telework eligibility and frequency
  • Review or development of a hybrid workplace plan
  • Review of existing or development of a tailored telework policy or employee agreements
  • Evaluate a current telework program to maximize productivity and benefits
  • Provide best practices for a productive home office
  • Incorporating or review of telework as part of a Continuation of Operations (COOP) plan
  • Technology needs assessment

When did Telework!VA begin?

DRPT launched the Telework Virginia program in 2001 in Northern Virginia.  The program was expanded to the Richmond and Hampton Roads regions in 2006.  Telework!VA is now available to employers throughout Virginia.

Why was Telework!VA created?

DRPT created Telework!VA to mitigate traffic congestion.  The more teleworking that happens the more cars are taken off the road, which helps address traffic congestion and improves air quality.

What is DRPT?

DRPT is a state agency that reports to the Secretary of Transportation. Our focus is the movement of people and goods throughout the Commonwealth, and our primary areas of activity are rail, public transportation, and commuter programs. DRPT works with local, regional, state, and federal governments, as well as private entities to provide support for projects and programs.

The mission of DRPT is to facilitate and improve the mobility of the citizens of Virginia and to promote the efficient transport of goods and people in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner. We are the Commonwealth’s advocate for promoting transportation options to the general public, businesses, and community decision makers. As an agency entrusted with public dollars, we seek the highest possible return on investment to maximize limited funding and strive to implement best practice management tools and techniques.
